Everyone has a favorite dish: for one American nurse, it’s lentil soup. It’s so good he’s been cooking lunch at work every Saturday for 17 years.

Most need variety in their diet. Not so Reid Branson. The nurse employed in Seattle, USA, shot himself in lentil soup during the week. And that for 17 years. The Washington Post tracked him down and asked him about his routine and recipe.

Branson’s daily work is unpredictable. He works as a nurse in an HIV clinic at a Seattle hospital. Because of the corona virus, he has even more to do than usual, but there is one thing he can always count on: Greek lentil and spinach soup. It’s hearty with lentils as a base and potatoes and pumpkin as a side dish. The soup is seasoned with all kinds of aromatic spices and fresh lemon juice. He’s been cooking them every Saturday for almost two decades – and stuffing them into four jars. Enough for eight lunches. If there’s anything left, the 63-year-old is happy to share the soup with his wife.

It all started when the recipe for his favorite canned soup was changed. He no longer liked the new recipe. So he went looking for an alternative. And found a lentil soup recipe in Crescent Dragonwagon’s 1992 Dairy Hollow House Soup & Bread cookbook.

This soup always tastes different

Branson still can’t get enough of the soup because it always tastes different, he told The Washington Post. “It’s always a bit of a surprise: the onion came out strong this time, or else it’s a really good butternut squash. If I hadn’t made it so often, I never would have noticed.”

But all good things come to an end, even the traditional Branson lunch. He will soon be retiring. The nurse still has less than four months to work. Then he will probably stop cooking his soup. But for the coming out party, he wants to cook it again. So many things that all his colleagues can try.

Here is the soup recipe.
